Gojukensha in the begining, where are they now?
In the mid 70's Karate was relatively still unknown and was surrounded by mystic and vague references
in the movies. When Bruce Lee burst on the scene Karate clubs were suddenly inundated with students all
hoping to aspire to be just like the " Little Dragon."
I was training at lesser known club located in Pascoe Vale and at that time it was Kyokushinkai and the
instructor was a 1st kyu Brown Belt named Peter Corbitt.
We were a very strong club in fighting but also very unified and all close friends.Sensei Peter was always
concerned about the future and how do we advance in grades.Kyokushinkai gradings were very costly
with half the money going to Japan.Sensei thought we would be better off training with Jack Rozinski
and Mr Oh of Ji Do Kwan Taekwondo.Everyone had to learn all new katas and adapt to their style of
fighting.
I recall one Thursday night a guest instructor popped in to teach a new style of Karate in Australia,
it was called Gojukensha and the Sensei was Con Athanassiou 2nd Dan and the rest is history.
Gojukensha flourished producing some fine Black Belts whom either stayed with Gojukensha or
went on to promote another style of Karate.
At Pascoe Vale their was originally 5 Black Belts , Sensei Peter Corbitt, 3rd Dan, George Bonucci 2nd Dan,
David Zarb 2nd Dan, Warren Carey 2nd Dan, Paul Stevenson 2nd Dan.
Other students went on to bigger things such as Gary Jackson whom was a Green Belt at the time.
I get very disillusioned when some of the current Gojukensha senior instructors have forgotten where
it all began for them.Sensei Peter Corbitt gave them the skills to be able to get where they are now.
Every time I read a reference to Gojukensha Sensei Peter is never metioned and only vague references to
Sensei Con which is disappointing .If Sensei Con had not become disillusioned with Kyokushinkai and searched for another style,Gojukensha may not be where it is today.
